The replacement of the existing University Pumping Plant is part of a complete upgrade of the water service infrastructure on Panoramic Hill in Berkeley, CA. The Pumping Plant is part of the essential facilities required for domestic water supply as well as fire protection for this environmentally sensitive area. BTA assisted EBMUD with the development of the preliminary architectural design of the proposed Pumping Plant, preparing illustrative drawings and visual simulations for presentation to neighbors and the local property owners association.

The new Pumping Plant composes poured-in-place stained concrete, metal roof and channel glass stair wall to create a highly secure, durable facility that balances its presence on the public way with the District’s functional requirements.

Though a small intervention, it will provide an essential service for decades to come. Its simple palette of materials allows the structure to age well and gradually merge with the bucolic site surrounds.
